The Gallery – Motherhood – Boobs & bemused…

June 16, 2010

I wasn’t sure I’d be brave enough to post a pic of my boobs online but after reading that Tara’s prompt for The Gallery this week was ‘Motherhood’ how could I not? Plus some lovely, lovely people on Twitter told me to go for it 🙂

To me motherhood is two things: breastfeeding (look at us go on day 2! I loved breastfeeding…as you can read about here). Even having done it I find it incredible that a woman can make milk and provide her child with sustinance, needing nothing else for months. The body is an amazing and beautiful thing and despite all my issues, I’m very proud of mine for growing and feeding my beautiful baby boy.

And this slightly bemused look on coming home from hospital just a couple of days later.

Scared, overwhelmed, hesitant, panicked, afraid.

Happy, amazed, thrilled, emotional, completely and utterly in love.

Those first few days of motherhood are best (and scariest!) days of your life.

Good luck to 4 lovely ladies who are  embarking on this most incredible adventure  in the coming weeks. Shelley, Carly, Karen & Louise (in due date order!) – you’ll be fantastic. xxx

You think? Oh thank you! The Fear was just setting in. I think this is the only time in those first weeks I didn’t cry!

Lovely photos. How glossy is your hair a few days later – hormones!??
I enjoyed breastfeeding my boy too, was quite surprised how well we both took to it.

Hormones maybe but it’s more likely grease!

I so agree with the bemused! It’s like opening a new piece of equipment with no instructions! We manage though don’t we!

We manage because we must. Then the next one seems oh so simple!

They’re lovely! Funnily enough a breastfeeding photo was my second option – I must be on a mission to get my boobs out this week.

Do it, do it, do it!!

Bemused is the perfect word – nothing quite prepares you for it, huh?

Lovely photos – though you’re looking far more glam than bemused that early on! 😉

Why thank you! I felt a million miles from glamorous though I can tell you!

Lovely (and brave!) choice of photos. I would probably describe the first few days as terrifying rather than bemusing though…!

Thank you! I had so much help & couldn’t do much (emergency section) so the fear didn’t set in for a week or so!

  7. June 16, 2010 10:02 am

Wow! you are brave, hats of to you. I would go with terrified rather than bemuse for the first few days.

I think I was too dosed up on morphine to experience the full terror! Bemused, confused and knackered summed it up for me!

  8. June 16, 2010 10:03 am

sorry that should have been ‘hats off’ and ‘bemused’

I obviously didn’t experience motherhood then as I didn’t breastfeed! Can I join your list of ladies about to pop please?! 😀

I didn’t mean it like that! This is my take on motherhood & to me it was breastfeeding. Have a look at the other photos on The Gallery to see other people’s take on motherhood. It’s fascinating!

And of course I will add you! (sorry!)

Yay, #boobpride! Thanks for your advice. I’m glad I did it – it’s not too bad a pic.

That is the face of fear you know.

I’m going to look back on those pics in the 1st few days in a differnet light now! I didn’t feel glam, just a bit shocked!

Well done – great blog – love your expression in the 2nd photo!

Good for you….it’s a beautiful picture.
I really can see all of those feelings in the last picture…lovely. I still remember that scared “what do we do now?” feeling when I came home with number one. X

It is the scariest feeling in the world! Next time will be a breeze!!

number one is such a step into the unknown, by number 2 I was a bit more relaxed!

glad you were able to breastfeed x

I think if we do have another I will be so different, much more relaxed and understanding of what I have to do.

We were so lucky with breastfeeding, he just ‘got it’. He’s like his Dad – love boobs!

I didn’t breastfeed either *however* I have the scars, the stretchmarks, the memory of utter exhaustion/fear/horror and hysterical bubbling laughter that someone saw fit to let me home with a small baby to make me realise that i am a mother.
Motherhood is many things to many people and I’m really rather impressed that a) you got your boobs out online and b) you look so damned gorgeous in your second pic.
There’s a pic of me in the ether with a 5 day old W. I have a big face like a moon. Huge, pale and possibly a little unwashed 😉

I am on my third and she is raising herself, or so it feels 😀 I felt so lost on my first though. They are two GREAT photos, you look beautiful and not at all bemused 🙂 Jen.

    Hello!
I breastfed all of my 3 girls and for me this too symbolized each of their first 6 months of age!
I wouldn’t dare put my boobs on the internet but I admire you for doing it!
    take care

  19. June 16, 2010 8:44 pm

Coming home from hospital with the first was so scary! No wonder you look bemused. I can still remember it as if it was yesterday.

  20. June 16, 2010 9:43 pm

Oh I remember coming home with Baba how scary was that you summed it up so well x

  21. June 17, 2010 8:53 am

definitely, you look like a new mother on picture 2 !
perfect to illustrate motherhood ! well done !

Great pics. I’m with you, it’s amazing that you can grow a little person and amazing that your body can make milk that is all they need for six months. I love breastfeeding too (good job, as we’re still at it at 16 months) so wonderful to have quiet snuggly time together.
